East Austin Schools and Employers

This month, we’re spotlighting East Austin, a neighborhood of Austin, Texas.  This week, we’ll be taking a look at some of the schools and employers in this Central Austin area.  The area is vast, so we couldn’t possibly cover all of the schools, so we’ll just pick a few.

Blackshear Elementary is ranked Recognized by the TEA and is located in East Austin on East 11th Street.  Blackshear’s mascot is the Yellow Jacket and their colors are Blue and Yellow. The Mission of Blackshear Elementary is to provide a healthy, safe instructional environment, conducive to positive learning experiences in which every individual is treated with dignity and respect. Blackshear faculty, staff, and students believe it is critical, as Gandhi said, to, "Be the change you wish to see in the world."

Kealing Middle School is located on Pennsylvania Avenue off East 11th Street and is home to a rigorous magnet program in addition to a standard middle school curriculum.  Their mascot is the Hornets and their colors are Crimson and Cream.  Kealing serves nearly 1200 students in grades 6-8.

Many students who attend Kealing Middle School choose to attend high school at the Liberal Arts and Sciences Academy, which is located on the Johnson High School campus less than 10 miles Northeast of the Central East Austin neighborhood.  Their mascot is the Jaguars.

As far as employers, East Austin’s convenient location just east of downtown makes it a great place to live to commute to work downtown.  There are also a lot of employers in the Mueller Development in East Austin.

Dell Children’s Hospital is located in the Mueller Development, near 51st Street and I-35.  Dell is the leader in pediatric healthcare services for Central Texas and offers careers for healthcare professionals who specialize in taking care of the most vulnerable patients:  children.

The Good Life Team is a Realty office located on East Cesar Chavez, just a few blocks off I-35.  They employ specialists in all portions of the real estate process, from staging to title and escrow to ensure that the customer has the best experience possible buying or selling their home.

East Side Dining and Entertainment

This month, we’re spotlighting the East Austin Neighborhood of Austin, Texas.  This week, we’ll be taking a look at some of the dining and entertainment options in this hip Austin area.

El Chilito is on Manor Road and is a favorite with Eastside Residents from college students, to bearded hipsters, to Moms and Dads looking for something their youngster will eat without complaining.  Their breakfast tacos are muy delicioso, as are their fresh salads, tacos and burritos.  They also have agua frescas and beer on tap to keep your thirst at bay while you enjoy their outdoor seating.

East Side King at The Liberty Bar on East Sixth is the original, and many say best, East Side King location.  This trailer, started by Top Chef Winner Paul Qui when he was just moonlighting from his day job as an Uchi chef, serves up amazing Asian fusion dishes at a fraction of the cost you would pay at Uchiko or Qui.  The Fried Brussel Sprout Salad, Tori Meshi, and Beet Home Fries are NOT to be missed; sheer heaven in a paper food boat.

Gourmands Neighborhood Pub, off East 7th on Webberville, serves up gourmet sandwiches and homemade soups in bread bowls, accompanied by chips and pickled vegetables made in house.  Top it off with a full bar and healthy draft beer selection, and you have a spot so good the word “Pub” doesn’t do it justice.

Looking for entertainment?  Well you’re in luck!  The East Side is literally dotted with theaters, performing everything from classics like Tennesee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire (The City Theatre on Airport near Manor) to original works born and bred right here in Austin (The Rude Mechanical’s Off-Center on East 7th).  There’s also Salvage Vanguard Theater and The Vortex, both on Manor Road.

If you’re looking for Visual Art, don’t worry, the Eastside is chock full of that too!  From Up Collective, on East Cesar Chavez, Flatbed Press and Gallery on East MLK, and Blue Genie on Springdale, to name just a few, painting, photography, prints, sculpture and even performance art is thriving on the East Side!

Central East Austin

This month, we’re spotlighting the Central East Austin Neighborhood of Austin, Texas. This quickly revitalizing area is bordered by I-35 to the West, Lady Bird Lake to the South, 183 to the North and Ed Bluestein Boulevard to the East.  It’s a large area with a lot of different neighborhoods encompassed within its boundaries.

Historically, East Austin was inhabited by African Americans, especially after the city forced them to move there during segregation in the early 20th century.  However, now the area is much more diverse and has become popular among everyone from students, to artists to young professionals. The mix of old and new residents lends the area a unique and vibrant atmosphere and each individual neighborhood has its own different flavor.

Manor Road has a mix of gourmet restaurants (Salty Sow), coffeeshops (Thunderbird Coffee), bars and theatre spaces (The Butterfly Bar/Vortex), and is located just on the other side of I-35 from the University of Texas.  As a result, this area is popular with students, but families also enjoy living in the neighborhoods adjacent to Manor, Cherrywood and French Place.

East 7th Street has a mix of the old (family owned Mexican restaurants like Joe’s Bakery and Coffee Shop), and the new (coffee shops like Vintage Heart Coffee and Mexican-fusion restaurants like Takoba.)  It's also home to the nationally recognized Rude Mechanicals Theatre Company, who operate the The Off-Center theater in a converted warehouse off East 7th Street, and to the University of Texas Elementary School.

The Mueller Development was built on the site of the old airport and has a mix of single family homes, row houses, apartments, and retail, as well as Dell Children’s Hospital and will be the site of the new Austin Playhouse.

As you can see there’s somewhere for everyone in East Austin!
