Texas State University was recently awarded a Community Stewardship
Award from Envision Central Texas. They were honored for their work on
the Spring Lake Aquatic Restoration project, the San Marcos Record reports.
Texas
State was recognized in the Natural Infrastructure category, which
bestows the honor on an individual, company, organization or
governmental entity for coming up with an important project which will
"enhance or protect the region's environment and natural resources."
The
Spring Lake Aquatic Restoration encompasses removing the structures
from the former Aquarena Springs theme park, restoring the grasslands
around the area, removing exotic vegetation and establishing a buffer
zone between the Spring Lake and the adjoining golf course. Texas State
is partnering with the U.s. Army Corps of Engineers for the project.
Spring
Lake contains eight species on the U.S. Endangered Species list and is
the site of important archaeological resources dating back 13,000
years.
