Decorate with items that illustrate who you are, where you've been and where you want to go. Keep your treasured possessions where you can see and enjoy them, not hidden away. Also, feel free to follow the Zoey Deschanel rule: be quirky! Sure interior design has rules, but it's mostly helpful hints about placement of frames or size of decorative objects. There's nothing in those rules that tells you what to put at the proper height or what that scaled object is. Use those unusual aspects of you and your belongings to make your home fun and interesting.
Anyone can go to their local big box store and buy everything that's sold together on the shelf. But where's the fun in that? Make sure you use one-of-a-kind items to keep your apartment from looking like an IKEA showroom. One way to get that uniquely you vibe? Put your collections on display, whether they be Hummel figurines or something better suited to the tv show "Oddities". (Taxidermied monkeys anyone?) Make sure you give them a special place in your home to make you happy and keep your guests guessing!
Don't be afraid of color! Paint it on the walls (with your landlord's permission, of course), put it on your couch, your throw pillows, heck spray paint your decorative objects if you find them too blah. Don't worry about what goes together, just use your instinct and toss color in wherever and whenever you can!
Finally, make sure the stuff you see when you go through your house makes you happy. Who cares if no one else would ever dream of buying it, if it makes you smile, then it works in your space! Along with that, be confident in your choices. Don't be afraid to make bold choices and go for it when it comes to pulling together the perfect habitat for you!
