Travis Heights Schools
This month we’re spotlighting the Travis Heights Neighborhood in Austin, Texas. This week we’ll be exploring the schools in this vibrant neighborhood located just south of downtown.
Travis Heights Elementary is a two-way dual language English/Spanish immersion elementary school located right next to Big Stacy and Little Stacy Parks. T.H.E. will become an in-district charter beginning next year, a move that was led by over 90% of the community with the goal of being able to become more autonomous and innovative in their instruction.
Fulmore Middle School is the Humanities and Law Magnet for AISD and is located right in the thick of the excitement of Austin on South Congress Avenue. Former Texas Governor Ann Richards taught at Fulmore and John Henry Faulk, whose lawsuit ended the Hollywood Blacklist, was a student. In addition to a rigorous academic environment for magnet students, this uniquely Austin school offers enriching electives to both magnet and non-magnet students including Sci-Fi Creative Writing and film-making courses. It is also likely to soon become an AISD Dual Language campus in English and Spanish.
Travis High School’s mascot is the Rebels and school traditions and pride run deep. Travis High is organized into career-based Academies that students choose at the end of the freshman year, although students can choose classes from all the academies. Unique offerings include video game design, engineering and a hospitality partnership with Hyatt Hotels. Travis High also has the only academic decathlon team in AISD and Central Texas.
