City Candidates Debate

City candidates debated last Thursday over development in San Marcos, as well as the environment, the University Star reports.  The debate was held at the San Marcos Activity Center.

The two mayoral candidates, current mayor Daniel Guerrero and challenger Thomas Prentice, touted their greatest achievements.  Guerrero said his was the efforts he led with the San Marcos City Council to put early education at the forefront.  Prentice spoke of his preservation efforts in Ohio, where he lived previously.  Guerrero opened by stressing his responsibility to San Marcos to be a "moderator and a listener for his constituents".  Prentice's first action was to pass around pictures of the Earth's atmosphere and speak about his opinion on the "human condition" in San Marcos.

Prentice spoke out against the city using non-native grass that uses a lot of water rather than a native drought-tolerant variety.  He also said he thought that the city's zoning committee's membership requirement that members have to have owned property in San Marcos for at least three years was "anti-democratic".  Both candidates were for green technology and smart development, with Guerrero specifically saying he supported using rainwater and using renewable resources to build.

City Council Place 5 and Place 6 candidates debated with each other, since their competitors did not show up.  A major bone of contention in that race was the construction of The Retreat, a student apartment complex that was built off Ranch Road 12 and opened this year.  Citizens were upset that the students had a bad effect on the single-family housing neighborhoods.  Traffic, road construction and water conservation were other subjects covered in the debate.
