San Marcos ranks as the 10th "least expensive" urban area as far as cost of living in the United States. The ranking comes from the 2nd Quarter 2012 Cost of Living Index report by the Council for Community and Economic Research, the San Marcos Record reports.
The mayor pointed to the ranking as proof that San Marcos is "highly competitive" when it comes to cost of basic needs like housing, utilities, health care, etc. He also praised the city for its great quality of life and education options.
San Marcos shares the list with only three other Texas cities: Harlingen, McAllen, and Wichita Falls. Nationally, the top 10 is rounded out by Muskogee, Oklahoma, Norman, Oklahoma, Fayetteville, Arkansas, Memphis, Tennessee, Armore, Oklahoma and Springfield, Illinois.
The ten most expensive cities to live in are New York (Manhattan), New York (Brooklyn), Honolulu, San Francisco, San Jose, New York (Queens), Stamford, Connecticut, Washington, D.C., Framingham-Natick, Massachusetts, and Orange County, California.
Other lists San Marcos has been seen on in recent years include "one of the best places to raise children" in BusinessWeek Magazine and one of the top 15 "family friendly" places by Ebony Magazine.
