IRS Targets Professor's Home

The IRS is targeting a Texas State Professor's home for alleged money laundering, the University Star reports.  Sindy Chapa, assistant professor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication may have her home in Kyle seized by the government for being bought with laundered money.

A lawsuit was filed in the San Antonio federal court asking for her home at 1019 Fairway to be forfeited.  The home is valued at $262,140 by the Hays Appraisal District.  Chapa reported to the paper by email Thursday night that "as of today I have no formal documentation of what the authorities will do.  Thus, I have no comments."

The university is not commenting on the matter either as they say it is not a university matter at this point.  They say that her teaching responsibilities will stay the same, although a substitute taught Chapa's Research Methods class Thursday evening.  The substitute said this was no unusual and did not know why she was asked to step in for Chapa.

Chapa's ex-boyfriend may have been Tomas Yarrington Rulvalcaba, who used to be the mayor of Matamoros, Mexico and is the ex-governor of Tamaulipas, Mexico.  Federal officials have been investigating Yarrington for alleged money laundering.  Due to this relationship, agents suspect Chapa's houses in Kyle and McAllen may have been bought with illegal funds.
