TxSt Water Research Center will be Established

A Texas State Water Research Center will be established, thanks in part to a grant of $1 million from the Meadows Foundation.  The center will be the site of water research and will examine the relationship of water to the environment, The San Marcos Record reports.

The Texas State University System Board of Regents changed the name of the Texas State's River Systems Institute to "The Meadows Center for Water and Environment" in honor of the gift.  The foundation is based out of Dallas and plans to keep funding the center for years into the future with the goal of permanently endowing the center.  The first $1 million gift is to fund the work of Andrew Sansom, who directs the center.

The Meadows Foundation is funding the center because of its environmental plan, which prioritizes work focused on water quantity and quality, land and habitat conservation, sustainable energy and environmental awareness.  The President and CEO of the foundation sees the center as an important source of scientific research that will help determine what water management policies should be enacted in Texas to ensure there is water for residents and wildlife in the state into the future.

The River Systems Institute opened in 2002 thanks to money from the Meadows Foundation.  The Meadows Center will work in concert with other departments at Texas State, such as the nationally recognized Department of Geography and the Aquatic Resources program in the Department of Biology.  They will also collaborate with research centers at other institutions of higher learning in Texas and across the globe.  In addition, the center is supported by the Texas Water Development Board, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

The University plans to find other philanthropic gifts and funds from the state for the balance necessary to fund the new center.
