Get More Time in Your Day: 10 Simple Ways

Carving more time out of your busy schedule may sound like a pipe dream.  With the way most of us run our lives these days, it can feel like if a genie offered 3 wishes, we'd ask for time, time and more time!  Apartment Therapy helps you eliminate those time wasters in your life and find more time, no magic required!

Use your commute time wisely.  You can make phone calls (if you aren't driving, that is), mentally plan out your day, listen to a book or just focus on the world around you and center yourself.  Another great tip is to say, "no thank you" when asked to go to something you really don't want to go to.  Look at your calendar for the week on Monday and eliminate any unnecessary meetings, appointments, calls or events that you don't absolutely have to (or want to) attend.

If there are tasks you can delegate to your coworker, spouse, roommate, kids, etc, do it!  It can sometimes seem easier to do it yourself, but if you get in the habit of getting others to help, you can reduce your stress level immensely.  You should also keep a time diary, at least for one day, to see where you spend you time.  If you find you waste a couple of hours a day on social media sites, or checking your email, it may be a little clearer why you can't get the necessary stuff done.  Another tip is to check your email only at certain times during the day, maybe once an hour at the most.  This can save an enormous amount of time if you only read and respond periodically rather than constantly.

Examine what errands you run each week and make a schedule that will make them quicker.  Do all your errands on one day or group them by location and split them over two days.  Another way to regain some time is to cut down on tv watching and the time spent on social media.  Also, enlist your children's help with household chores.  You'll gain time and they'll gain a feeling of accomplishment by knowing they're pitching in.

Finally, wake up a few minutes early each day to read the paper, exercise, meditate, etc, before the day and others' demands encroach on you.
