Bike Lanes are planned for Thorpe Lane and Mill Street, and San
Marcos Transportation engineers are holding two meetings for the public
to give their input, The San Marcos Record reports.
The
Thorpe Lane meeting is to be held at Allen Woods Homes at 6pm Thursday
July 19th and the Mill Street meeting will be at Mill Street Park on
Monday, July 23rd at 6pm. (Please note the original article has the day
of the 2nd meeting incorrectly listed as Thursday, July 23rd.) Both
streets are included in San Marcos' 2012 Street Overlay Program.
The
initiative looks at each street that is set to be repaved or have minor
reconstruction to see if there are low-cost ways such as restriping or
sidewalk improvements, that could improve accessibility and safety for
everyone on the roadway. Making the street safer and more accessible to
everyone on the road, whether it is vehicles, pedestrians, bicyclists
or public transit, is the focus of the Complete Streets Initiative.
Reconstructing
a roadway is extremely expensive and takes decades to finish, so if
engineers can make improvements to a roadway's capacity and
accessibility by using cheaper methods such as restriping, it can
provide users immediate relief.
Thorpe Lane is a four-lane,
undivided commercial road with sidewalks on both sides. The proposal
suggests reducing the lanes from four lanes to three lanes and including
bike lanes between Springton Way and Warden Lane. Mill Street, which
is a two-lane residential street with parking on each side, would see
its bike lane extended from Uhland Road to Aquarena Springs Drive.
