Beach Decor on a Budget may be what you're craving now that the
weather has turned warm and your thoughts may have turned to ocean waves
and sandy beaches. But even if you can't get away to an exotic
climate, About.com has some tips for bringing the beach to your apartment.
Using
white is a great way to conjure up the allure of the beach. After all,
the best beaches have white sand and if you're an apartment dweller,
your walls are most likely already white, so you've got a head start on
this part of your assignment. Using white will make your room seem much
larger and brighter and by mixing fabrics, textures and tones of white,
you'll create drama and a room that keeps the eye constantly moving.
Adding pops of color such as warm yellows or cobalt blue will bring in
the flavor of the beach and the water while still keeping your room
serene.
Bring the beach into your decor literally (and cheaply) by
using driftwood, shells and natural glass that you've collected in your
travels. You can even glue the shells and other objects around thrift
store frames or mirrors for a one-of-a-kind display that is easy on your
wallet. But be sure to only use the real stuff to keep your decor from
looking like a Red Lobster or other tacky theme restaurant.
Another
great trick for making your apartment feel relaxed and beach-like is to
use patio furniture inside. You can often score great deals on Craig's
List or at garage sales on patio furniture that can be brought back to
life with a quick coat of spray paint and some recovered cushions. Be
careful though to be aware of comfort when choosing your objects. An
outdoor jute rug may be great on the porch, but those rough fibers can
be hard on your tootsies when you're lounging watching tv.
