Austin Hotels Sprucing Up

Austin Hotels are sprucing up their rooms and their lobbies to compete with several new hotels that are in development, Statesman.com reports.  And the improvements go beyond replacing furniture into major renovations.

Some of the hotels that are in the pipeline are one at East 2nd Street and Congress Avenue which will have 1,012 rooms, a Hyatt Place at East Third Street and San Jacinto Boulevard and a Hampton Inn and Suites with 137 rooms at 17th and Lavaca.

Renovations are under way at the Omni Austin Hotel at 700 San Jacinto Boulevard.  They will be completely redoing the top five floors at a cost of more than $1 million per floor, or $78,000 per room. Improvements like granite countertops, leather headboards, faux cowhide bathroom walls and in-room fitness equipment are intended to take the design from urban chic to urban luxury "while keeping the flavor of Austin".

The Arboretum's Renaissance Austin Hotel is also getting a major facelift.  The restaurant will be completely redone, the patio bar will be three times larger and all of the 492 rooms will be redone.  The goal of the redesign is to make the hotel more chic, modern and comfortable.  The General Manager wants to use the selection of all the furnishings and artwork to make the rooms quintessentially Austin; something you could only find in our fair city.

The work will be spread out over the year so the hotels will never have to close, and will be planned for typically down months such as early January, summer, and late December.  Most of the renovations go beyond the required replacements of soft goods every six years and the replacement of furniture every twelve years.
