Filing a Claim on your Renter's Insurance is something most people
don't even think about. But there are certain steps that should be
followed to be sure you have recorded everything you need to be
reimbursed by your insurance company. Insurance Rate.com walks you through the process.
Call your insurance agent or company as soon as you know that you have
had a loss, whether it is due to fire, theft, vandalism or any other
circumstances. Most insurance companies have a line that is available
around the clock so you can file your claim immediately. In the case of
theft or vandalism, call the police and file a report first.
Ask for an estimate of how long it will take to process your claim so
you will know how long you will be without your belongings. Also, be
sure to carefully fill out the claim form from your insurance company,
including video or pictures of your damaged possessions and a complete
list of everything you lost.
Many policies will cover your living expenses if the damage precludes you from living in your apartment.
In this case, be sure to keep receipts of your hotel bills, dining and
other living expenses so you can submit them for reimbursement.
